In this thesis, we propose a twisted-string-based compact actuation mechanism and its control algorithm to overcome the limitation of the actuation performance of robotic systems. The motor-fixed gear-based system, which is a representative drive mechanism for robotic systems, cannot achieve a wide range of speed-torque driving area because of its thermal and mechanical limitations. In particular, in the case of a small-sized robot system, the volume occupied by the actuator is considerably limited, so there are many restrictions on the selection of the actuator. As a result, the final performance of the robot is also limited. To overcome this limitation, various small multi-speed or continuously variable transmission mechanisms that can amplify the speed or torque output have been proposed. However, because of the complexity of the mechanism and the limitation for miniaturization of the mechanism parts, the existing transmission mechanisms have difficulty to apply to real robotic systems.
The proposed actuation mechanism combines a compliant twisted-string mechanism and a rigid-clutch-based mechanism to provide a compact and simple mechanism and an automatic transmission mechanism, which can increase the speed-torque operating area. The proposed actuation mechanism has two twisted-string drive modes with different twisted radii, and each drive mode produces different input-output transmission ratios. The drive modes are dynamically separated and produce a complete transmission shifting mechanism. With the proposed mechanism, the transmission mechanism can be implemented in a compact robotic system and contribute to the expansion of the speed-torque or speed-force drive area for robotic systems. In particular, we attempt to overcome the performance limitation of the existing fixed-gear-driven robots by applying the proposed mechanism to small robots such as robot hands and grippers. For the force control, a small force sensor design based on the photo-interrupter has been proposed, which can be implemented in a sufficiently small space to mount on a robot finger. Low- and high-lever controllers are designed to control the force and automatic transmission shifting. The proposed mechanism has been implemented in a single module, and its performance has been experimentally verified.
