In this paper, limitations of conventional haptic actuators are surveyed. To overcome the limitations, a hybrid haptic actuation system is proposed. The proposed system consists of 4 parts: a DC motor, a novel MR brake, piston-cylinders and a pressure sensor. The 4 parts are connected with flexible tubes to lighten the weight of the structures on an operator’s body. Two types of novel MR brake are proposed. Rod less MR brake uses flow mode and pinch mode for highly resistive force. Piston-head less MR brake uses two coils which winded in different directions to generate highly resistive force without non-magnetic spacer. The performance of the proposed hybrid actuation system was verified by virtual wall experiments and application to a hand master is also tested.
