With the increasing demand for wearable electronic devices that can be attachable to human bodies, displays that can be stretched to a significant amount are gaining more and more interest. However, stretchable displays using organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) have been difficult to realize and were, if any, not as efficient as their rigid or flexible counterparts. This is mainly due to the lack of stretchable semiconductors and transparent conductors. While development of such materials should also be continued, it is equally important to realize a structure that can fulfill the requirements for stretchability yet provide a platform on which high-efficiency OLEDs can be made. To this end, we propose a novel architecture where OLEDs are formed on multiple rigid isolation regions connected via serpentine stretchable interconnectors the whole structure of which are supported by an elastomer substrate with an extremely low Young’s modulus (E). By using $silbione^TM$ as such material with a very low E (=3.0 kPa). an array of OLEDs was realized that can be stretched to 140-150% without a sigifcant drop in the electrode performance as well as in their brightness.
