Unlike conventional thermoelectric generators (TEGs), flexible TEGs can be firmly attached to objects having any type of surface because of lightweight and high flexibility. It is advantageous to be applied to various wearable applications. Therefore, many studies have been conducted to improve the performance of the thermoelectric generation on the human body in order to use a thermoelectric generator as an energy source of a wearable device.
The performance of a TEG is influenced by various factors. The major factors are the performance of the thermoelectric material, the structure of the TEG, and the change of the external thermal environment. While the structural design of TEG is optimized by thermal model, the other two factors have room for improvement. Up to date, it has been considered that the improvement of the ZT value is directly related to the performance of the thermoelectric material. For the external thermal environment, the condition is limited to the convection environment with general heat dissipation structure.
In this study, the optimum point of material properties of thermoelectric materials was calculated based on the thermal resistance model in a wearable application. As a result, it was confirmed that evaluation factors other than material ZT exist in the thermoelectric material optimization for high output power in the wearable application. In addition, to solve the problem of the large volume and inflexibility of the conventional heatsink, the heat dissipating part for wearable applications based on Phase Change Material (PCM) was designed and manufactured. In this study, sufficient temperature difference compared to the conventional heatsink can be maintained for a certain period using the latent heat of the PCM. At the same time, the heatsink based on PCM can be applied to the flexible TEG because of its flexibility.
