Gamma ray survey meters are used to measure ambient dose equivalent rates before and after radiation works at nuclear power plants. The detector commonly used in gamma ray radiometer is a GM tube, which is simple in construction and has the advantage of having a large pulse signal produced by interaction with radiation. Because gamma ray survey meters using GM tubes have a wide energy response depending on the energy of incident radiation, an energy compensation filter is used to reduce the response. However, commercial gamma ray survey meters mostly show the energy response less than 1.5 MeV, high energy gamma rays like 7.1MeV, which is emitter from $^{16}N$, are not measured correctly. To improve this problem, the optimization of material, thickness, and gap distance for the energy compensation filter was performed using the MCNP code to ensure that the energy response of the survey meter is within 40% of the range from 20 keV to 7.1 MeV given by IEC standards.
