Prognosis and diagnosis of the leakages in a pipeline is important in the viewpoint of preventing the waste of resource and energy. In particular, there are many practical applications that are involved with very long length and multi-branched pipelines, which makes the leak detection very difficult. This study is based on the acoustic reflectometry, for which the leaks in the pipeline system are regarded as the discontinuities that reflect the incident sound. The pressure reflection coefficient obtained by the Fourier transformed impulse response function includes the information on the reflection from all discontinuities in the pipeline. However, by applying the window function to the localized position and performing the Fourier transform, the pressure reflection coefficient of a leak can be estimated. Furthermore, the size of the leaks are estimated through comparison with the reflection coefficient calculated from the theoretical model. Localization experiments are conducted with 1, 2, 3, and 4 mm circular leak located at 9.34, 14.50, 23.50, and 29.70 m. The maximum localization error is 0.021m for 1 mm leakage located at 29.70 m. Size estimations were made for 2, 3, and 4 mm leaks. The detection criterion of leak was defined from the 99% confidence interval of the ripples. Leak smaller than 0.5 mm could not be detected with this criterion. For 1 mm circular leak, after fitting the magnitude of peak to the exponential function, intersection point with 99% confidence interval is defined as localization limit. Localization limit is increase with decrease of low frequency limit. Leak detection experiments were conducted on leaks in the axial and transverse directions with aspect ratios of 1, 2.25, 4, and 9. As a results, small rectangular leak can be localized base on the lumped parameter model. Also, size estimation is possible by assuming rectangular leak as circular leak of the same effective cross-sectional area. The effects of multiple leaks include multi-reflected signal and reduction in the reflected signal by transmission. The effect of multiple leaks is negligible for leaks smaller than 3 mm. In the experiment, IRF of branch signal can be estimated by using first and second reflected signal from branch. Estimation error is 8.83%. Finally, IRF except branch signal can be obtained by removing estimated branch IRF from original IRF. In the reconstructed IRF, shift of the leak signal by branch signal can be compensated.
