Initiation and propagation of crack is one of the main mechanisms of fracture of structures. In case of engineering materials for industrial use, when there’s cracks in material mechanical properties are degraded and reach to fracture. More over engineering material shows trade-off relationship between stiffness and toughness, which means when stiffness increases toughness decreases and when toughness increases stiffness decreases.
However, in nature highly stiff and highly tough materials are found in living organism’s body due to evolution in harsh environment. Such material has no stress concentration near crack tips even when cracks exist in the material and increases the crack path.
In this study, the behavior of cracks in bio-material are predicted through phase-field model. Phase-field model was able to simulate the crack behavior of bio-material more accurately than previous crack model. By modeling the behavior of cracks in bio-material, toughening mechanisms of bio-material was investigated.
