The applicability of titanium aluminide (TiAl) intermetallic compounds composed of $\alpha_2$ and $\gamma$ phases has been limited due to its low ductility. Despite extensive studies, the deformation mechanisms of the ductile $\gamma$ phase have not been thoroughly elucidated. We perform a combined theoretical and computational study to investigate and understand the deformation mechanisms of single crystal $\gamma$-TiAl nanowires under uniaxial tension/compression tests in 10 different orientations. We find that $\gamma$-TiAl nanowires deform by four different mechanisms of ordinary slip, twinning, mixed slip/fracture mode and super slip and that deformation modes can be systematically predicted based on Schmid factor, generalized stacking fault energy (GSFE) surface, and size effect.
