The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship bewteen the behavior of news usage and civic engagement among Korean youth, who are consuming news in a new media environment different from previous generations. To this end, analysis on news behavior and civic engagement of Korean youth was conducted based on the results of the '10th Youth Media Usage Survey', released by the Korea Press Foundation in January 2017. The study clarified that in spite of significantly higher usage of new media such as social network services and internet media compared to that of old media such as television and radio, old media as well as new media stimulates social participation of the youth. Specifically, regardless of the difference in nature or characteristics, the media themselves are critical to youth participation in society. Hence, in a bid to induce appropriate civic engagement of youth, integrated media literacy education, embracing both old and new media, would be required so that young generation can consume news and cultivate ability to critically evaluate information through various media.
본 연구는 이전 세대와는 다른 새로운 미디어 환경 속에서 뉴스를 소비하는 우리나라 청소년들의 뉴스이용행태와 사회참여 간 영향 관계를 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 한국언론진흥재단이 2017년 1월에 발표한 ‘10대 청소년 미디어 이용 조사’ 내 청소년 뉴스이용행태와 사회참여에 관한 설문결과를 바탕으로 통계분석을 실시하였다. 그 결과, TV와 라디오 등의 올드미디어에 비해 소셜네크워크서비스, 인터넷매체 등의 뉴미디어 사용률이 현저히 높음에도 불구하고 뉴미디어뿐만 아니라 올드미디어 또한 여전히 우리나라 청소년의 사회참여에 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 즉 서로 다른 미디어 특성과 매체의 차이를 떠나 미디어 그 자체가 청소년의 사회참여에 중요한 영향을 미친다는 것이다. 따라서 청소년들의 올바른 사회참여를 유도하기 위해서는 올드미디어와 뉴미디어를 모두 포함한 통합적 미디어 리터러시 교육을 제공함으로써, 청소년들이 다양한 미디어를 통해 뉴스를 소비하고, 정보를 비판적으로 평가하는 능력을 배양할 수 있도록 해야 한다.
