Studies on empirical analysis of herd behavior in equity markets widely use cross-sectional dispersion of individual stock returns as a measure of herding based on the assumption that investors trade securities following market consensus when they herd. In this paper, we propose a new measure of herd behavior which captures comovement on the individual stock returns in order to test whether investors trade in the same direction at the same time, i.e. herd. We apply our new method to the Korean stock market and find the evidence of herd behavior. Herding pattern differs depending on the level of the average market return. Sell (buy) herding is observed when the average market return is strongly negative (positive). The result also shows higher levels of herding on the sell side than on the buy side. Furthermore, we find no evidence of return reversals after the herding period, implying that herding in the Korean stock market is likely to be information-driven behavior.
주식시장 전체의 허딩행태(쏠림현상)를 검증하기 위해 기존의 선행연구에서는 허딩이 시장 포트폴리오 방향으로 일어난다고 보고 시장수익률에 대한 개별 주식 수익률들의 확산 정도를 허딩의 척도로 이용하였다. 본 연구에서는 개별 주식들이 같은 방향으로 거래되는 형태의 허딩을 측정하기 위해 개별 주식 수익률들의 동조성을 이용한 새로운 척도를 제시하였다. 이를 이용해 분석한 결과 국내 주식시장에 허딩현상이 존재하며 평균시장수익률에 따라 허딩의 방향과 크기가 달라지는 현상을 발견하였다. 허딩현상은 시장이 강한 상승세인 경우 매수 형태로 발생하였고 강한 하락세인 경우 매도 형태로 발생하였으며, 허딩의 정도는 상승장일 때보다 하락장일 때 더 강하게 일어나는 양상을 보였다. 또한 허딩으로 인해 미래 시점의 시장수익률에 유의한 역전효과가 나타나지 않았으며 이를 통해 국내 주식시장의 허딩현상이 정보 요인에 기인해 발생한 것임을 시사하였다.
