The intensification of competition due to globalization, the advancement of technology, and the evolution of market needs are making it difficult for firms to achieve innovation performance on their own. While research has been following the footprints of this industrial shift on innovation factors, most of its attempts were based on the tangible and quantitative aspects of cooperation. The qualitative aspects of the interactive measures that would be as influential on the process and outcomes of the collaboration have not been dealt in earnest.
This study aims to carry out an introductive research on the qualitative features of the interactive factors of innovation. Two issues in the qualitative aspects were covered in the study which we believe would help heightening the understanding of ‘why’ and ‘how’ firms should collaborate to yield better innovative performance. The first study, from the resource-based view, examines how the positioning of the core resources in cooperation affects its consequences. With empirical analyses of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) on data from Survey of Korean Venture Firms 2012, it demonstrates how the motivational direction of the cooperation, deriving from the core resources, influences the cooperation network structure and its resulting performances. The second study focuses consequential impacts of the interaction orientation of the cooperation. By identifying and analyzing the imitative behaviors in firm’s investment policies, it indirectly tests how firm's passive orientation in interaction with external factors influences its innovative performance. Panel data analyses using the 2-stage least squares (2SLS) regression with instrument variables on the North American firm data of 1980-2010, were applied in the study to back the investigation with empirical results.
Collectively, this dissertation endeavors to provide deeper insights in the interaction of firms to gain innovative performance. It provides implications regarding the directional and orientational aspects of firm interaction that yields better innovation outcomes. Moreover, it contributes to the literature by empirically demonstrating the qualitative aspects of interaction, which methodologically had been hardly approached in an empirical way. We hope the introductive study on the qualitative aspects of interactive factors of firm innovation would catalyze more multi-dimensional approach to firms’ interaction for innovative performance, leading to a deeper understanding of interaction.
글로벌화에 따른 경쟁의 심화와 기술의 고도화, 시장 니즈의 진화는 기업이 자체적으로 혁신 성과를 이룩하기 어려운 상황을 만들고 있다. 혁신 성과를 좇는 기업들의 시선이 기업 내부적 요인에서 외부적인 요인으로 돌아감에 따라 기업의 혁신 네트워크와 협력 활동에 대한 연구가 더욱 활발히 진행되어 왔다. 그러나 대부분의 협력 연구는 협력의 정량적인 측면에서 접근하여 협력 활동의 유효성을 확인하는 형태로 이루어져 왔다. 본 연구는 그간 ‘누구와’, ‘어떤 형태’의 협력이 필요한지를 중점적으로 밝혀온 문헌에 두 가지의 정성적인 질문을 던짐으로써 협력을 ‘왜’하는지, 그리고 ‘어떻게’ 해야 하는 지에 대한 실증적 이해를 돕고자 한다. 본 연구는 기업의 협력 활동을 동기적 요인과, 태도적 요인 두 개의 축으로 나누어 살펴본다.
첫 연구는 자원기반관점에서 협력을 바라보고 기업의 핵심 자원이 협력의 방향성에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 확인한다. 핵심 자원이 협력 활동에 어떠한 동기적 요인을 제공하는지에 따라 기업의 협력 네트워크가 어떻게 구성되고, 그에 따른 기업 혁신 성과가 어떻게 나타나는지 살핀다. 한국의 벤처기업정밀실태조사 (2012) 데이터를 활용한 SEM 분석은 기업의 핵심 자원을 바탕으로 한 협력의 방향성이 협력의 협력 형태와 이를 통해 성취하는 혁신 성과에 미치는 영향을 세부적으로 파악하였다. 두 번째 연구는 협력 활동에 임하는 기업의 태도를 수동적 측면과 능동적 측면으로 나누어 그 영향력을 파악하였다. 이 연구는 기업의 모방적 의사결정 활동을 통해 기업의 수동적인 상호작용이 어떠한 기업 상황에 더 강하게 나타나는 지 확인하고, 이를 기업 혁신 성과 연계하여 기업 협력의 수동성이 어떻게 혁신 성과로 나타나는 지 검증하였다.
종합적으로, 본 학위논문은 두 편의 연구를 통하여 기업이 외부의 조직 개체와 갖는 상호작용에 대한 통찰을 제공한다. 이는 단순히 누구와 어떤 형태의 협력이 혁신 성과에 영향이 있는지에 대한 검증을 넘어, 어떠한 요인과 어떠한 관계 속에 협력이 이루어져야 하는지에 대한 방향성을 제시한다. 또한 정량적인 분석 방법으로 정성적인 요인을 파악함으로써, 정성적인 요인에 대한 영향력을 실증하고, 기업 협력에 대한 연구가 다차원적으로 이루어질 수 있음을 보인다. 협력에 대한 정성적인 접근을 제안하는 이 작은 학위 논문을 기초로 기업의 협력에 대한 연구가 더욱 다채롭게 진행되어 협력 활동에 대한 더 깊은 이해가 이루어지길 바란다.
