This thesis investigates if smart uniforms can promote group-based activity. Group-based activity brings motivation and competition to the participants. To promote group-based activities, members of an organization need to maintain stable relationships, which can be achieved by sharing and acknowledging collective goals in a collaborative atmosphere.
To promote group based activity, I developed ActiveUniform, a smart wear for members of a group. It displays the data related to group and individual activities on smart fashion wearables. It can also be connected to an activity tracking app (e.g. Runkeeper). The group performance is collected and displayed on group members' wearables. The current ActiveUniform uses an armband worn inside the group uniform. To understand the impact of ActiveUniform on people's experiences, I conducted a user study. 14 participants？ 10 male and 4 female, were involved in the user study. I observed whether walking together with ActiveUniform would improve the user's sense of belonging and motivate them to exercise more. In addition, I identified potential areas of improvement for ActiveUniform and its system. The results showed that ActiveUniform can bring a sense of belonging, competitive spirit, curiosity and motivation.
