While delivering visual information in images and videos with the use of dots, lines, faces, and colors, this research starts with a question whether lines solely influence emotional response. In visual information, lines may be the most fundamental part which determine forms, but there is a lack of basic research on the relationship between effects of lines and viewers’ emotional state. Thus, this study aims to compare emotional response generated from observing different types of lines and explore whether Georges Seurat’s rhythmical lines are valid in our age. We first obtained biometric data from 20 participants (10 males and 10 females) using the measurement instrument SA-3000P to verify the relationship between degrees of stimulation and emotional response derived from lines. Second, we conducted a survey on paintings of Georges Seurat who derived neo-impressionism from impressionism. Based on theories of lines, the survey consists of three parts, 1) David Pierre Giottino Humbert Superville's three schemes of expansive, horizontal, and convergent lines applied on face, 2) Antoinette Bouhuy's three schemes of curved lines applied on face, and 3) Seurat's rhythmical lines in his paintings. Moreover, we calculated and compared cosine similarity values of each survey question for investigating the relationship between six types of lines (Superville and Bouhuy’s line schemes) and 21 paintings including Seurat’s artworks. 50 participants (27 males and 23 females) were assigned to participate in the survey and an evaluation scale was constructed on the basis of James Russell's circumplex model with eight emotion categories. The result shows that people feel certain emotions strongly as they perceive different types of lines used in paintings and facial expressions. In addition, we determined the relationship between line usage and 21 paintings by calculating cosine similarities between paintings regardless of genres, color palettes, and topics. Thus, this research proposes to apply the result to analysis of art and digital contents to explore the relationship between visual perception and corresponding emotions since line usage in compositions of movie posters in film industry is one of effective ways to convey emotions and atmosphere.
본 연구는 점(dots), 선(lines), 얼굴 표정, 색상 등으로 전달되는 시각적 정보들 중 선이 감성에 미치는 영향에 대해서 다룬다. 물체의 형상을 시각적으로 정의하는데 있어서 선은 가장 기본적인 요소이지만 선이 사람의 감정에 미치는 영향과 선과 감성의 상관관계에 대한 연구는 부족한 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구는 여러 유형의 선으로부터 관측되는 감성 반응들을 비교, 분석하고 현 시대에도 조르주 쇠라 (Georges Seurat)의 감성선 (Rhythmical Lines)이 유효한지 조사한다. 첫 번째 실험은 측정 도구 SA-3000P를 사용하여 20 명 (남자 10 명, 여자 10 명)의 생체 인식 데이터를 얻은 뒤 자극의 정도와 감성의 반응 간의 관계를 확인하고 두 번째 실험을 통해 선의 유형과 방향이 감성 상태에 주는 영향을 관찰한다. 두 번째 실험은 인상파에서 신인상주의를 이끌어 낸 쇠라의 작품을 중심으로 설문을 진행하였고 1) David Pierre Giottino Humbert Superville의 팽창 (expansive), 수평(horizontal) 및 수렴(convergent) 선들과 2) Antoinette Bouhuy의 3 가지 곡선 그리고 3) 쇠라의 그림 속의 감성선 등 기존 선 연구들을 비교, 분석하였다. 또한 Superville 및 Bouhuy의 회선 방식과 쇠라의 작품을 포함한 21 가지 그림의 관계를 조사하기 위해 8 가지 감성 분류가 있는 James Russell의 Circumplex 모델을 기반으로 평가 척도를 작성한 뒤 분석 결과들의 코사인 유사도를 계산 및 비교하였다. 총 50 명의 참가자 (27 명의 남성과 23 명의 여성)가 설문 조사에 참여하였고 실험을 통해 사람들이 회화와 얼굴 표정에 사용된 여러 유형의 선을 감지했을 때 강한 감성 자극을 받는 다는 것을 확인하였다. 또한 장르, 색상 및 주제에 관계없이 선의 사용이 21개의 회화에 미치는 감성 간의 관계를 코사인 유사도를 통하여 확인하였다. 본 연구는 선의 사용법이 감성과 분위기를 전달하는 효과적인 방법 중 하나이기 때문에 시각적 인식과 감성의 관계를 탐구하고, 영화 산업의 영화 포스터 구성 등 예술과 디지털 콘텐츠 분석에 그 결과를 적용 할 것을 제안한다.
