Online social network services penetrate the various environments surrounding us and have a great impact not only on the lives of individuals but also on society as a whole, especially on firm activities and market values. However, understanding of the growth of online social networks and understanding of social influences on the information dissemination through individual participation in online social networks is still limited. This study explores three important research topics: How helpful is application programming interfaces (APIs) adoption to the growth of incumbent and emerging social networks? Is it possible to predict long-run IPO performance through the information people send and receive on online social networks? Finally, do user-generated contents on online social networks in various languages affect the stock markets? I analyzed the online social network usage indicator data for 10 years and over 1.8 billion conversations generated by user of social networks, and conducted empirical analyses on the research topic. Through this study, I found that: through theory building, the API adoption helped to form small groups in online social networks, and more users were joined through group formation, and the participation of users in social networks increased. By analyzing the 1.8 billion data from online social networks, firms that had positive conversations with people showed higher returns from a long-term perspective. Analyzing the same social network conversation data, listed firms with overseas activities confirmed that the more the foreign language users talk, the more the stock trading volume increases.
온라인 소셜 네트워크 서비스는 우리를 둘러싼 다양한 환경에 침투하여 개인의 삶 뿐만 아니라 사회 전반, 특히 기업의 활동과 시장 가치에도 많은 영향을 미치고 있다. 하지만 온라인 소셜 네트워크 서비스의 성장에 대한 이해와 소셜 네트워크 내에서 개개인의 참여를 통한 정보의 유통과 이에 대한 사회적인 영향에 대한 이해는 아직 제한적이다. 이 연구에서는 세 가지 중요한 연구 주제에 대한 탐구를 진행한다: 시장에 참여하고 있는 소셜 네트워크의 성장에 응용 프로그램 인터페이스 (API) 도입이 얼마나 도움이 되는가? 소셜 네트워크 상에서 사람들이 주고 받은 정보를 통해 IPO의 예측이 가능한가? 마지막으로 다양한 언어로 생성된 소셜 네트워크 컨텐츠가 주식 시장에 영향을 주는가? 10년간의 온라인 소셜 네트워크 사용 지표 데이터와 소셜 네트워크 사용자가 생성한 18억개가 넘는 대화를 분석하여 연구 주제에 대한 실증 분석을 진행하였다. 이 연구를 통해 우리는 다음과 같은 내용을 발견했다. 이론 탐색을 통해 API 도입이 소셜 네트워크 내에서 작은 그룹을 형성에 도움을 주며, 그룹 형성을 통해 더 많은 사용자가 유입되고 유입된 사용자들의 소셜 네트워크 참여가 증가하였다. 온라인 소셜 네트워크에서 얻은 18억개의 데이터를 분석하여, 사람들이 긍정적인 내용의 대화를 나눴던 회사들은 장기 관점에서 더 나은 수익률을 보였다. 같은 소셜 네트워크 대화 데이터를 분석하여 해외에서 활동이 있는 상장 회사는 외국어 사용자가 대화를 많이 할수록 주식의 거래량이 증가함을 확인하였다.
