In this paper, I use the risk factors from both the fiance and energy economics literatures to derive an improved asset pricing model in the context of the U.S. electric utility sector. I compare empirical performance of the CAPM, the Fama and French(1993)(FF henceforth) three-factor model, Carhart(1997) four-factor model, the FF(2015) five-factor model, the Hou, Xue, and Zhang(2014)(HXZ henceforth) q-factor model, and the Augmented HXZ(AugHXZ henceforth) model. The AugHXZ model includes the market factor, size premium, investment premium, profitability premium, and commodity risk factors(oil price risk and natural gas price risk) which aim to examine the importance of commodities in asset pricing. It is shown that the AugHXZ model describes the cross-section of the stock returns better than other factor models in the GRS F-test. Therefore, I suggest the use of the AugHXZ model in the U.S electric utility sector.
본 연구는 재무 및 에너지경제 분야 연구문헌의 위험요인을 사용하여 미국 전력유틸리티 섹터에 대한 개선된 자산가격모형을 제시한다. 이를 위해 CAPM, Fama and French(1993)(이하 FF) 3요인 모형, Carhart(1997) 4요인 모형, FF(2015) 5요인 모형, Hou, Xue, and Zhang(2014)(이하 HXZ) q-요인 모형의 GRS 검정 결과, HXZ 모형의 퍼포먼스가 가장 좋게 나타난다. 또한 HXZ 모형에 원유가격 요인과 천연가스가격 요인을 추가한 확장 HXZ 모형이 GRS 검정 결과, FF 5요인 모형, HXZ 모형 보다 퍼포먼스가 더 좋게 나타난다. 이러한 결과는 원유가격 및 천연가스가격 요인이 전력유틸리티 섹터 수익률의 횡단면에 영향을 주는 중요한 변수임을 뒷받침해준다. 따라서 본 연구는 확장 HXZ 모형을 미국 전력유틸리티 섹터의 기대수익률의 변화를 가장 잘 설명하는 모형으로 제시한다.
