In this thesis, I find that unusually low trading volume explains forthcoming negative information about changes in cumulative abnormal returns and standardized unexpected earnings around earnings announcement date. Different from the previous study, it appears that there is a high-volume return premium in Korean market after controlling for other information that may affect the relation between volume and earnings surprise. On the basis of this premium phenomenon, I focus on the relation between unusually low volume and forthcoming negative information. The empirical results show that as short-selling constraints are more binding, unusual low volume has significantly more information. On the contrary, greater short-seller trading activity reduces the information content of unusually low volume about earning surprises.
