This study examines whether foreign equity investment promotes domestic firms’ innovation activities. Using panel data on the Korean firms during the 1999？2013 period, we find that foreign ownership has a positive effect on firms’ innovation activities. Furthermore, we also show that, as compared to non-chaebol firms, chaebol firms’ innovation activity becomes much greater with the increase of foreign ownership. Finally, we investigate industry-level spillover effects of innovation. Specifically, we find that foreign ownership promotes innovation activities via forward linkage, the effect of which is also more pronounced in chaebol firms. (JEL F21, G32, O3)
본 연구는 외국인 지분 투자가 국내 기업의 혁신 활동에 미치는 영향을 검증하고자 한다. 1999년-2013년 기간 동안 한국 기업의 패널 데이터를 통해, 외국인의 지분이 기업의 혁신 활동에 양(+)의 영향을 미치는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 외국인의 지분이 증가할 때, 비재벌 기업에 비해 재벌 기업의 혁신 활동이 더욱 크게 증가함을 발견하였다. 마지막으로, 산업간 파급 효과의 경우, 외국인 지분의 혁신 활동에 대한 영향이 전방 파급 효과에서 두드러지며, 재벌기업에서 더욱 뚜렷하게 나타남을 확인했다.
