The relationship between firms’ innovation and employment change is a controversial topic. Firms’ innovative activities can increase the employment growth if it increases demands for new products. On the other hand, new technologies can substitute the labor and reduce employment. In this paper, I analyzed how a firm’s R&D intensity affects the growth rate of a firm’s employment. By an empirical study of Korean manufacturing firms, I find that the relationship between firms’ R&D intensity and the employment growth has an inverted U shaped. The high R&D intensity does positively affects employment growth at first, but hamper in the end. As a conditioning effects, the inverted U shaped relationship is also observed in low concentration and low-tech industries, while the relationship is positive in high-tech industries, and statistically insignificant in high concentration industries. These phenomena are associated with whether firms invest product innovation or process innovation, diminishing marginal product of R&D, and business stealing.
기업의 기술 혁신과 고용 변화는 경제 및 경영 분야에서 중요한 연구 분야이다. 제품 혁신을 통하여 나온 신제품의 수요가 생겨 고용을 증가시킬 수 있는 반면, 기존 제품의 공정을 효율적으로 변화시켜 새로운 자본이 노동을 대체할 수도 있다. 본 연구에서는 기업의 기술혁신 활동의 지표로 연구개발집중도를 사용하여 고용성장률에 주는 영향을 분석하였다. 한국의 제조업 기업들의 자료를 이용하여 실증분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. (1)기업의 연구개발집중도와 고용성장률은 역 U자형 관계를 갖고 (2)시장집중도로 산업을 분류했을 시, 시장집중도가 낮아 경쟁이 심한 산업에 속한 기업의 경우 이러한 역 U자형 관계를 보이지만 시장집중도가 높은 산업의 경우 연구개발이 고용에 미치는 영향은 유의하지 않았다. (3)마지막으로 저기술 산업의 경우 역 U자형 관계를 보이는 반면, 고기술 산업은 양의 관계를 보였다. 이러한 현상은 기업이 수행하는 혁신의 종류, 체감하는 연구개발의 한계생산물, 그리고 연구개발의 결과로 생긴 시장 점유율의 변화 등과 연관되어 있다.
