The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influence of the design parameters on the performance of stoker type municipal waste incinerators (300 ton/day). Effects of the combustion air inlet distribution and geometry modifications have been investigated using the numrical simulation tool, FLUENT, and the performance of incinerators has been estimated by a mixing parameter and a thermal decomposition parameter. The mixing efficiency in the combustion chamber was quantified by the newly defined mixing parameter, which has value of zero when gases are mixed completely, and whose departure from zero indicates degree of un-mixedness. The 1st order Arrhenius kinetics accompanied by a Lagrangian particle tracking method was used to estimate the thermal decomposition parameter.
