Increasing quantities of sewage treatment and sludge generation have called for the integrated sewage and sludge management for the efficient design and operation. Because by this time in Korea, the design practice has been mainly concentrated on wastewater treatment only, and the sludge disposal has been realtively neglected.
A municipal sewage trearment plant in Seoul Metropolitan, Korea is studied using the modified OSMP (Optimal Sludge Management Program) computer package that can estimate the minimum cost using the SUMT (Sequential Unconstrainted Minimization Technique) algorithm to determine optimal value of the operational and design parameters.
After the calibration and verification of the model with Tanchun sewage treatment plant data which is in southeast part of Seoul Metropolitan, the optimal criteria of the engineering parameters are evaluated.
The mean cell residence time, biomass decay rate in the activated sludge system, and the effect of unstable operation of the sludge treatment process are investigated with respective to the treatment level requirement and economic efficiency.
