Recently, GUI(Graphical User Interface) has been being more important than ever because it provides a friendly operating environment to user. So, the graphic processors have been widely used to run efficiently and speedy the graphics system such as MS-Windows, X-window, Machintosh, et al. The GISC graphic processor, a RISC type graphic processor, has been being developed for this reason at KAIST, it supports the general graphic instructions, but it does not have the graphic instructions supporting GUI effectively. In this thesis, we propose the graphic instruction set and architecture for FISC type graphic processor to improve the graphical performace of the GISC. The proposed graphic instruction set has been designed by analyzing graphic functions of the MS-Windows and found the frequently used graphics functions - color expansion, pixel block transfer, patterned fill, patterned line drawing, etc. The designed graphics instruction set and architecture perform these functions more faster than the original GISC. The enhanced GISC graphic processor are compared with the original GISC and other graphic processor. We evaluate the performance of the enhanced GISC by the modified DLX simulator. The simulation results confirm that the enhanced GISC has the better performace than the original GISC graphic processor.
