This paper describes the design of Graphics Accelerator for Fast Phong Shading Algorithm. This architecture consists of three major functional blocks : FIG(Function Input Generator), VIMU(Vertical Interpolation and Masking Unit), MIG(Mask Input Generator). FIG generates such information as color intensity and Z depth for 64 pixels in horizontal direction and sends them to the VIMU. VIMU performs hidden surface elimination and shading with Z buffer algorithm and Fast Phong Shading algorithm, respectively. MIG generates mask pattern which can distinguish extent of real object and send its data to the VIMU. This architecture processes one patch at a time in the bit-serial mode, where a patch consists of 64×64 pixels.
This Graphics Accelerator has the performance of processing about ten thousands of triangles per second.
