This thesis describes the design and implementation of the English semantic analysis system for the MATE-EK(MAchine Translation Environment-English to Korean). The input of this system is phrase structures which is the output of the English syntactic analysis system, and the output is LSSs(Lexical Semantic Structure) which in turn is the input to the English-Korean transfer system. The LSS is named so because the structure is meant to represent the meaning of input sentence, and the structure reflects the relations among lexical items of sentence.
The semantic analysis consists of preprocessing, structural ambiguity resolution, normalization, particular verb phrase identification, tense calculation, deep case determination, and LSS construction. This thesis introduces a method using heuristics for syntactic ambiguity resolution of prepositional phrase and deep case determination of optional case node.
Each module of semantic analysis system is written in GWL(Grammar Writing Language) and converted to LISP program to be executed.
