Polymerizable amphiphiles which contain acrylamide moiety in the hydrophilic polar heads and two long alkyl chains or cholesterol in hydrophobic tails were prepared. It was found that cholesterol-based polymeric vesicles could extract free cholesterol 2.8 times more effectively than dialkyl chain-based ones. This result is interesting and remarkable. We believe that the free cholesterol is incorporated into the pendent cholesterol bilayer more effectively than dialkyl chain bilayer. This suggest a possibility of new potential application of cholesterol-based vesicles.
