Space launch vehicles, which are used to place artificial satellites on a desired orbit, generate thrust by expelling exhaust gas of which temperature and pressure are very high. Since the temperature of the plume itself is extremely high, base region of the launch vehicle undergoes huge heat transfer. Therefore the heat transfer to the base region of the launch vehicle by the plume needs to be studied to accomplish a thermal protection system. In this study, numerical studies on the heat transfer to a base plate and a nozzle external wall are conducted by solving RANS and RTE numerically. As a result of numerical analysis, it is found that maximum heat flux of the base region tends to decrease as a flight altitude increases.
