As the patients suffering from shoulder disease are increasing, the need for upper arm rehabilitation is also growing. To meet the demand, various shoulder rehabilitation robots have been developed. However, they did not consider the anatomical mechanism of shoulder joint movement. It decreases effect of rehabilitation or may cause shoulder injuries, such as shoulder subluxation. This paper aims to develop and evaluate a passive shoulder joint tracker (PST). The PST allows natural shoulder movement by tracking shoulder joint in 3D space and compensating the gravity force. The motion analysis protocol of shoulder movement was developed to evaluate the effect of PST by 4 factors: the maximum elevation arm angle, the location of shoulder joint, the tracking performance of the device and the reaction force and moment on shoulder joint. As a result, it allows the natural shoulder movement and reduces the reaction force and moment on shoulder joint. In conclusion, the PST can allow comfortable movement of the upper limb by combining with commercial devices.
