Researchers on the world focus on the research to develop efficient and clean energy generating devices to meet the needs of developing environmental friendly energy devices. Among these energy generating devices, solid oxide fuel cell has spot light since it has high efficiency and possible to use waste heat to generate additional electricity. Also, solid oxide fuel cell could use hydrocarbon fuel directly to generate electricity, which doesn’t need additional system for generating hydrogen.
Solid oxide fuel cell is composed with ceramic layers and the pile of cells are stacked to generate electricity which could meet the power demand. The assembly of the cells is called as stack and this structure has flow channel to deliver the reactants to the cells which are used to generate electricity at the reaction site of the fuel cells. The stack of the solid oxide fuel cell is operated in high temperature($600^circ C-1000^circ C$) and the sealing of the gases in the stack is important. The glass sealant could be used as the sealing material in the stack. However, the usage of the glass sealant could generate the slip at the interface of the interconnects. It is important to use the sealant which could seal the gas channel and hold the stack tightly. Therefore, the compressive gasket is used in the stack which could seal the stack properly and fix the shape of the stack.
This research is conducted about the compressive gasket in the solid oxide fuel cell stack. The compressive gasket needs proper compressive stress to work as sealant and it is important to know the pressure distribution on the gasket for making effective sealing at the stack with using bolts as pressure sources. The numerical analysis was conducted on this research to know the pressure distribution on the mica compressive gasket in the stack. The characteristics of pressure distribution on the gaskets with using bolts as pressure sources were analyzed firstly, and then the pressure distribution on the gasket with changing design parameters of the stack was analyzed. Also, the effect of the changing design parameters on the weak pressure region on the gasket was analyzed.
