The modern method utilized to invest capital in startups has been evolving. This method is changing into ‘Innovative Capital’ in hopes of better maximizing returns on investment within the startup ecosystem. This style of investment, referred to as ‘Innovative Capital’ is defined for this research as startup capital provided by an investor which not only includes initial financial funding but also access to advice and guidance from industry professionals on launching startups, marketing, product management, venture capital funding, and an eventual acquisition or IPO(initial public offering). Innovative Capital acts as a multi-sided platform for startups and Innovative Capital in this sense is clearly different from more traditional styles of investment performed in the past. To prove this evolution of the modern startup investment method, and the benefits of Innovative Capital, qualitative research interviews have been conducted with experts who are involved in the startup industry. Multiple case studies regarding various examples of Innovative Capital have also been analyzed.
과거의 스타트업 자본은 스타트업의 성장 단계별 ‘자금 수혈’에 치중하는 경향을 보였다. 스타트업은 투자받은 자금을 바탕으로 제품 및 서비스 설계에서 마케팅, 시장 확대 등 창업의 전 과정을 개별 기업 단위로 추진했다.
그러나 최근의 스타트업 자본은 금전적인 투자에 그치지 않고 스타트업 기업이 이전보다 적은 비용으로 빠른 시간내에 성공 궤도에 오를 수 있도록 돕는 ‘혁신 플랫폼’의 기능을 함께 제공한다. 즉, 오늘날의 스타트업 투자 자본은 스타트업 생태계 안에서‘초협력’과 ‘융합’의 구심점 역할을 하면서 일종의 ‘멀티사이드 플랫폼’으로 진화하고 있다.
스타트업 투자와 관련한 또 다른 변화는 엔젤투자자, 액셀러레이터, 마이크로 벤처캐피털(VC), 프리 시리즈 A 및 시리즈 A VC 간의 경계가 파괴되고 있다는 점이다.
본 연구에서는 이와 같은 스타트업 투자 자본의 변화 흐름에 주목하고 변화의 현상과 원인을 정보 비대칭의 측면에서 분석했다. 특히 다기능, 초협력, 영역 파괴로 요약되는 오늘날의 스타트업 자본을 포괄적인 ‘혁신자본’으로 정의했다. 이를 토대로 혁신자본의 역할 다변화와 투자 영역의 확대 추이, 혁신자본의 다양한 유형을 살펴봤다.
