In order to understand the present situation where the concern and expectation of the new online news business model aiming at the monetization coexist more and to find an alternative, it is necessary to understand what news content the user is interested in and pay the money have.
This study focused on users who paid money to online news contents for eliciting online news contents monetization strategy and focused on what news content characteristics led them to pay. The characteristics of news content were classified into power surveillance, social participation, fun/interest, helping, professionalism, and whether these variables influenced their willingness to pay.
It is confirmed that news contents with social participation, fun/interest, and providing help are positively correlated with users' willingness to pay. Especially, the greater the awareness of the alternative functions of the media such as social participation, the more willingness to pay and the professionalism of the news has a positive correlation with the intention to pay online news contents.
유료화를 지향하는 새로운 온라인 뉴스 비즈니스 모델에 대한 우려와 기대가 공존하는 현재 상황을 보다 입체적으로 파악하고 대안을 마련하기 위해서는 이용자들이 어떤 뉴스 콘텐츠에 관심을 갖고 돈을 지불할 의사가 있는지를 파악할 필요가 있다.
본 연구는 온라인 뉴스 콘텐츠 유료화 전략 도출을 위해 실제 온라인 뉴스 콘텐츠에 돈을 내본 이용자들에 주목하고, 어떤 뉴스 콘텐츠 특성이 이들로 하여금 지불의사에 이르게 했는지를 중점적으로 살펴보았다. 뉴스 콘텐츠의 특성을 권력감시, 사회참여, 재미/흥미, 도움제공, 전문성 등으로 분류하고, 이러한 변인들이 지불의사에 영향을 미치는지 여부를 알아봤다.
사회참여와 재미/흥미, 도움제공의 특성을 가진 뉴스 콘텐츠는 이용자들의 지불의사와 긍정적인 상관관계가 있는 것으로 확인됐다. 특히 사회참여 등 언론의 대안적 기능을 중요하게 인식할수록 지불의사가 높았으며, 뉴스의 전문성도 온라인 뉴스 콘텐츠 지불의사와 긍정적인 상관관계를 맺고 있는 것으로 나타났다.
