Due to the population growth and industrial development, the number of marine cargo volume by using vessels is rapidly increasing, and marine transportation of hazardous and noxious substances(HNS) is also increasing. HNS spills cause massive economic and environmental damages even though only one small case of HNS spill occurs. In addition, since HNS spill accidents have a serious risk of causing personal injury, it is necessary to prevent accidents and to take prompt countermeasures. At present, synthetic resin absorbent is mainly used in Korea, but most of the absorbents, which are one of the rapid response materials against HNS spills, are insufficient due to high cost of synthetic resin. This problem may lead to the spread of HNS when the HNS is released into the sea and it may be difficult for respond agents to react appropriately to the accident. Therefore, in this study, the possibility of HNS absorption, which constitute a large part of HNS trade volume, was investigated using waste resources such as coffee grounds and forest byproducts. The study was also analyzed using simplified LCA (S-LCA) to examine the economic and environmental feasibility.
