The fiber distributed data interface (FDDI) protocol provides 100Mbits/s fiber-optic token ring local area networks (LAN) for the application of back-bone, back-end, and front-end networks. With this protocol, synchronous and asynchronous traffics (up to eight different priority levels) as well as circuit-switched data are served in an integrated service LAN.
In this thesis, we study the management functions for the reliability mechanism of FDDI, and obtain the upper bound for the token circulating time that contains the lateness of the late token and the residual transmission time, and investigate the throughput of each traffic by the protocol parameters.
FDDI protocol은 100Mbits/s의 고속 전송 속도를 갖는 LAN으로 다양한 종류의 traffic을 사용할 수 있고 token의 ring circulating time을 제한하므로 real time 제어 신호나 음성 신호와 같이 delay 특성이 중요한 synchronous traffic을 사용할 수 있다. FDDI-II는 circuit switching data도 사용할 수 있는 LAN으로 PBX나 ISDN에 접속할 수 있는 protocol이다.
FDDI는 분산 network으로 management 기능을 각 station의 SMT에 구성하여 network을 관리한다. 그리고 NMS를 구성하여 network performance를 향상할 수 있다.
FDDI protocol은 cycle time의 평균과 최대값을 제한하는 중요한 특성을 가지며, 본 논문에서는 이러한 특성을 late token의 lateness와 asynchronous overrun 현상의 residual transmission time을 포함하여 이를 증명하고 synchronous traffic과 asynchronous traffic이 동시에 존재하는 경우에 각 traffic의 throughput을 구하였다.
