In general, the structural requirement for discotic liquid crystals is possession of flatt aromatic core of which surrounded by several flexible side chains and cholesteric liquid crystals are characterized by helical packing structure.
Helicene, a molecule with helical structure, is expected to have discotic as well as cholesteric characters. 7,10-Dimethenylhexahelicene diundecenate and N,N-Hexahelicene-7,10-dicarboxyl bis(dihexadecylglutamate) as it's derivatives were synthesized and investigated their liquid crystalline properties. Both those compounds revealed no mesogenic phase transition, only melting transition.
