Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol (DoD protocol) are currently the widespread used protocol, however ISO/OSI protocols have been adopted by the international community. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that a phased migration should be taken place.
This thesis takes a look at the gateway and designs a first step toward the ability for DoD and OSI protocols to coexist on the internetwork. We achieve the coexistence through the implementation of a gateway by encapsulation method. This method is used to combine the two incompatible networks into a single internetwork. We develop an implementation of the gateway for UNIX System V on the SSM-32.
