This study is concerned with development of a digital measurement system for the rotational accuracy of a spindle.
A microcomputer with appropriate input/output device comprises the central part of the measurement system hardware developed in this work. Three eddy current type gap sensors are adoped to monitor the radial error motion of a sipndle. Measurement is implemented under actual running condition based on, so called, the three point measuring technique. A special digital algorithm has been developed which can process the sampled error signals and separate the offset and roundness errors of the master ball from the pure spindle error. In addition, various software have been formulated with attention to graphical presentation of the data measured.
Finally, the measurement system designed and fabricated in this work was tested on a lathe, and its performance results are discussed in detail.
