This paper consists of two essays that examine how capital market participants such as investors and financial analysts process and incorporate information in the capital market. In the first essay, I investigate whether investors’ perception of a firm’s trustworthiness affects underreaction to earnings news. I find that underreaction to earnings news is weaker when the firm is perceived to be more trustworthy and this finding is robust to using Forbes' “America’s Most Trustworthy Companies” to capture perceived trustworthiness. In the second essay, I investigate the performance of analysts when they match the asymmetric timeliness of their earnings forecast revision with the asymmetric timeliness of firms’ reported earnings (i.e., accounting conservatism). I find that better conservatism-matching analysts produce more accurate earnings forecasts, elicit stronger market reactions, and have more favorable career outcomes.
본 연구에서는 주식 투자자들과 애널리스트들이 주식 시장에 제공되는 정보를 어떻게 해석하고 반영하는가를 분석한다. 본 연구의 앞 부분에서는 기업의 신뢰적인 이미지가 주식 투자자들의 행동에 영향을 미치는가 분석한다. 주식 시장에서 신뢰적인 이미지를 쌓은 기업일수록 주식 투자자들은 해당 기업의 이익 공시에 더 효율적인 반응을 보이는 결과를 발견하였으며, 이는 투자자들이 객관적인 재무 정보 외에도 주관적인 기업 이미지에 영향을 받는다는 것을 시사한다. 본 연구의 뒷 부분에서는 주식 시장에서 활동하는 애널리스트들이 기업의 보수적 회계 처리를 이해할 때 투자자들로부터 더 큰 반응을 불러일으키며, 이러한 애널리스트들은 더 정확한 예측치를 제공할 뿐만 아니라 향후 더 나은 경력을 쌓게 되는 것을 발견하였다. 이는 애널리스트들이 기업으로부터 공시되는 이익의 회계적 특성을 이해하는 것이 중요하다는 것을 시사한다.
