Small thruster system is necessary for flying ability and attitude control of small satellite. Liquid monopropel-lant thruster that has longer lifetime and simple structure is suitable for satellite attitude control system. Hy-drazine is representative propellant for monopropellant thruster. However, hydrazine has high toxicity and extra time and money for safety is needed. To replace carcinogenic hydrazine, researches about green mon-opropellants have been progressed. HAN, ADN based ionic liquid propellant and rocket grade hydrogen peroxide is handled as green monopropellants. These propellants are categorized as strategic materials, and there is limitation to manufacture and handle liquid monopropellants. HAN and ADN based ionic propellants has high performance because these propellants are mixtures of alcoholic fuel and aqueous HAN, ADN solution oxidizer. In this research, based on ionic liquid’s compositions, ethanol-blended hydrogen peroxide was investigated as alternatives of high performance green monopropellant, and performance evaluation of this propellant was progressed with firing test.
Theoretical performance evaluation was progressed first to verify possibility of replicability of established high performance monopropellants. NASA CEA Code was used for theoretical performance evaluation, and ethanol-blended 70 wt. % hydrogen peroxide has higher theoretical specific impulse due to its mixture ratio. References that identified detonable composition of $H_2O_2/H_2O/Ethanol$ were considered to select propellant composition that is non-detonable. 10 N scale liquid monopropellant thruster and its propellant feeding system was fabricated for firing test to evaluate ethanol-blended hydrogen peroxide’s performance.
70 wt. % hydrogen peroxide was used as oxidizer of ethanol-blended hydrogen peroxide. For performance evaluation, ethanol-blended hydrogen peroxide which O/F ratio is 30 that has lower theoretical performance was used for safe experiments. Manufactured propellant storage test is now progressing with 90 wt. % hydrogen peroxide. Preliminary test was progressed with platinum catalyst, and catalytic combustion without any ignition system was occurred with higher chamber temperature than adiabatic decomposition temperature of 70 wt. % hydrogen peroxide oxidizer. Characteristic velocity efficiency $(C \ast efficiency)$ was 87.7 %, thermal efficiency was 84.6 % for preliminary firing test.
Performance evaluation using platinum and palladium catalyst with same propellant was progressed to find optimal catalyst active material. Platinum and palladium with commercial $\gamma -Al_2O_3$ catalyst supports were fabricated for performance evaluation with wet impregnation method, thermal efficiency and 10 % of chamber pressure development time duration was measured for performance evaluation. 3 seconds of firing tests were progressed for 4 times with each catalysts. $C \ast$ efficiency was 95.1 %, thermal efficiency was 94.4 %, and response time was 0.201 seconds using $Pt/Al_2O_3$ catalyst. And, $C \ast$ efficiency was 63.6 %, thermal efficiency was 81.0 %, and response time was 0.253 seconds using $Pt/Al_2O_3$ catalyst. These results shows platinum is suitable catalyst active material for ethanol-blended hydrogen peroxide monopropellant.
Additional firing test was conducted to evaluate performance improvement method that means using different mixture ratio to prove replacement of established monopropellant. In this firing test, ethanol-blended hy-drogen peroxide with 70 wt. % hydrogen peroxide which O/F ratio is 15 was use. This propellant has 214 seconds of vacuum specific impulse, and $276.3 g·s/cm^3$ of vacuum density specific impulse, $1116.0 ^\circ C$ of adia-batic decomposition temperature that has higher vacuum density specific impulse than that of hydrazine and 90 wt. % hydrogen peroxide. In addition, evaluation of necessity of high thermo-resistant catalyst support with firing test was progressed because the phase of $\gamma -Al_2O_3$ changes with higher temperature exposure. Lan-thanum Hexa-aluminate (LHA) was used for high thermo-resistant catalyst support and Pt/LHA, $Pt/\gamma -Al_2O_3$ were used for performance evaluation of higher performance ethanol-blended hydrogen peroxide. Propellant was fired for 5 seconds with each catalysts and pressure instability was considered for necessity evaluation of LHA. $C \ast$ efficiency, root mean square error, standard deviation, pressure fluctuation were calculated with chamber pressure. $C \ast$ efficiency was 95.3 % with $Pt/ \gamma -Al_2O_3$ , and 92.8 % with Pt/LHA. Evaluation of meth-ods using different mixture ratio for higher performance of ethanol-blended hydrogen peroxide was proceeded. Both catalysts using different catalyst support has high combustion efficiency with firing test that means suitable with ethanol-blended hydrogen peroxide. Also using high thermo-resistant catalyst support is needed for higher performance ethanol-blended hydrogen peroxide due to pressure instability with results of firing test using LHA.
In this research, alternatives of high performance green monopropellant was suggested as ethanol-blended hydrogen peroxide. Theoretical performance evaluation of ethanol-blended hydrogen peroxide using NASA CEA codes. Preliminary firing test was conducted and catalytic combustion of ethanol-blended hydrogen peroxide was occurred without any ignition system. Platinum is optimum catalyst active material for ethanol-blended hydrogen peroxide for combustion efficiency. Performance improvement method of ethanol-blended hydrogen peroxide was evaluated with firing test. High thermo-resistant catalyst support is needed for higher performance of ethanol-blended hydrogen peroxide due to combustion instability.
For this research, self-sufficiency of high performance green monopropellant supply can be secured because 70 wt. % hydrogen peroxide and ethanol are both commercially available. In advance, localizationof smal thruster system for attitude control of satellite could be expected. Also, further research with ionic propellants can be progressed with this research because of similar composition. For future research, performance improvement of ethanol-blended hydrogen peroxide with different mixture ratio can be progressed. Develop-ment of high thermo-resistant catalyst support is needed for even higher performance ethanol-blended hydrogen peroxide. Propellant sensitivity test and storage estimation is needed to apply into thruster system for flying ability and attitude control of small satellite.
