This study aims to verify that the media coverage of science and technology and also national R&D funds follows a hype cycle pattern. Furthermore analyzing the correlation between news and national R&D funds is another goal of this study. Gartner's hype cycle, introduced in 1995, characterizes the typical development of an emerging technology. Through the hype cycle research, we can forecast the future of technology and innovation.
According to the analysis by 13 Korean newspapers, there was a significant positive correlation between the amount of news and the hype cycle. The correlation between national R&D funds and the hype cycle was also founded. It means that analysis of news and R&D funds can be used as a tool for predicting the innovation process of new technology. The chasm theory is a reasonable answer to explain the correlation. The meaningful correlation between news and national R&D funds was also revealed. This study perhaps gives some insights not necessarily to the academics but also to the practitioners and policy makers.
본 연구는 빅데이터를 활용해 과학기술 보도와 정부 연구비 추이에서 하이프 사이클이 발생하는지를 실증적으로 분석한다. 이는 보도 빈도 및 연구비 분석이 연구개발 정책과 사업 계획 수립에 유용한 방법론으로 쓰일 수 있음을 밝히는 데 의의가 있다. 1995년 소개된 가트너의 하이프 사이클은 가시성의 변화를 통해 신기술의 발전 과정을 규명한다. 따라서 본 연구에서 수행하는 보도 및 연구비 증감 추이와 하이프 사이클의 비교 분석은 기술의 미래를 예측하는 방법론이 될 수 있다. 또한 본 연구는 보도 빈도와 연구비의 상관관계를 분석한다. 이를 통해 보도와 연구비가 정책 수립 과정에서 상호보완적 방법론으로 활용될 가능성을 제시한다.
본 연구에서 수행한 13개 국내 신문사의 기사 분석 결과, 보도 빈도와 하이프 사이클은 양의 상관관계가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 연구비와 하이프 사이클도 유의미한 상관관계가 있었다. 이는 뉴스와 연구비 분석이 신기술의 발달과 혁신과정을 예측할 수 있는 도구로 이용될 수 있다는 것을 의미한다. 초기수용자와 대중이 신기술을 수용할 때의 시간차인 캐즘은 이러한 관계를 설명할 수 있는 적절한 답이다. 본 연구는 또한 보도와 연구비 사이의 상관관계를 밝혀냈다. 연구 결과는 학문적 가치뿐만 아니라 정책입안자 및 사업가와 연구 수행자에게 시사점을 줄 수 있을 것이다.
