Debris flows, ones of the flow-like landslides, travel at an extremely rapid velocity, hence those can cause economic and societal damages to urban areas. Installing debris flow barrier that can dissipates the energy of the debris flow is one of the frequently used methods for preventing the damages. In particular, slit-type barrier, one type of open-type barriers is widely used due to the minimum environmental disturbance. However, performance of slit-type barriers against debris flows remains poorly identified. Therefore, this study explores the roles of slit-type barriers in characteristics of debris flow behaviors via small-scale physical model experiments and numerical flow simulations. First, small-scale physical modeling was conducted to evaluate the effect of barrier arrangements on debris flow behaviors related to velocity reduction, trap ratio, and overflow. Herein, debris flows were consistently re-produced using the sand-water mixture. The effect of presence of large boulders was additionally explored with the debris flows produced using the sand-boulder-water mixture. The performance of slit-type barriers was discussed with respect to three major factors―velocity reduction, trap ratio, and overflow. The results showed that the extent of velocity reduction and the trap ratio decreased as the angle of barrier increased because the opening ratio increased. The V-type arrangements rendered the greater velocity reduction and trap ratio than the P-type arrangements for a given angle owing to the secondary collision between the bounced debris and the part of following debris. As the debris contained more boulders, the extent of velocity reduction and the trap ratio also became greater. As the angle of walls increased and the opening ratio increased, the magnitude of overflow decreased, indicating the less scouring impact by overflowed debris. Second, numerical simulations were conducted to understand interactions between the debris flow and the barrier and to evaluate the effect of barrier location along a channel and barrier arrangement on debris flow behaviors using a commercially available dynamic runout code, DAN3D. The barrier was installed at upstream (closed- and open-type barriers), midstream (closed-type barrier), and downstream (closed-type barrier) of the debris flow channel, and the debris flow behaviors were then simulated. By installing the barrier, the velocity, thickness, and volume of the debris flow were observed to decrease significantly, compared to the case with no barrier. In particular, installation of the barrier at upstream and midstream of watersheds resulted in the greatest reduction in velocity and installation of the barrier at downstream of watersheds resulted in the greatest reduction in thickness. Similarly with the closed-type barrier cases, the velocity, thickness, and volume were significantly reduced for the open-type barrier cases, but there was no significant difference among three cases at various arrangements. The obtained results contribute to better understanding of the debris flow behaviors under an influence by the barriers, and these be used for optimum design of the debris flow barriers.
