Recently, microalgae has received a great deal of attention as promising biodiesel feedstock, but biodiesel production from microalgae lipids is severely hampered mainly due the still extremely high production cost. The objective of this thesis, therefore, is the development of economic means for microalgae-based biodiesel production.
In the first chapter of the present work, the spectrum conversion system was employed to maximize light utilization efficiency and achieved high cell density under weak radiation. A mixture of two organic dye solutions of 9,10-diphenylanthracene and rhodamine 101 was used as wavelength converters, and lipid productivity was 2.3 times greater than without the organic dye.
In the second chapter, cheese whey, which is a byproduct of the cheese-making process, was used as a free nutrient source. Pretreatment was performed by means of a hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) system and then used for cultivation of Chlorella vulgaris. Five times higher cell density (5.2 g/L) was achieved compared to that of BG-11 medium.
In the third chapter, ferric chloride ( $FeCl_3$ ) was used to integrate downstream processes (harvesting, lipid extraction, and esterification) and increased economic viability. This simple process showed over 90% biodiesel recovery efficiency.
The topic of last chapter was that persulafte ( $S_2O_2$ ) was adopted as a substitute for hydrogen peroxide in the Fenton-like reaction and made full use of the potential of the iron-based technology. At a persulfate concentration of 2 mM, exceedingly high extraction efficiency over 95% was obtained, which was higher than with 0.5% hydrogen peroxide.
The technologies, which were suggested in this thesis, were indeed a competitive approach that can possibly lighten the process burden for the microalgae-derived biodiesel production.
