The practical uses of rechargeable batteries have expanded from portable electronics to large-scale applications and thus post lithium ion batteries (LIBs) have drawn considerable research interests. We employed first principles calculations to understand and predict electrochemical properties of electrode materials for sodium ion batteries (SIBs) and magnesium ion batteries (MIBs).
Firstly, we investigated birnessite-type manganese oxide as SIB cathode. By constructing a model that represents experimental findings, structural information including the coordination environment of Na ions and geometry of crystal water was obtained. Furthermore, the enhanced Na ion diffusion in birnessites was attributed to the presence of crystal water that widens the interlayer spacing and reduces the effective charge on Na ion.
The Na storage and ion diffusion properties of $M_2C$ -type MXenes were considered and compared to the Li analogues. The fundamental aspects of the trend observed in average voltage of MXenes were discussed regarding electrostatic interactions between adsorbed ions and host structure. In terms of predicted voltage and ion migration barrier, suitable MXenes were suggested as promising SIB anodes.
We examined Na ion adsorption and migration properties on transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) while taking the phase transition induced by sodiation into account. We noted that it is crucial to consider phase transformation when describing the TMDs. Two kinds of TMDs are expected to exhibit suitably low average potential while maintaining the same configuration upon Na adsorption and have low Na ion migration barrier.
Lastly, Chevrel phases (CPs) with a chemical composition of $M_6X_8$ (M = transition metal, X = O, S, Se) were investigated as cathode material for MIBs. By estimating the phase stability of both existing and hypothetical CPs, synthesizable ones composed of lighter transition metals than Mo were suggested. Possible increase in voltage by anion substitution and Mg ion migration properties inside these materials were also examined.
