The purpose of this paper is to develop an Expert System called HIBPES, which is an acronym for a Highway Bridge Planning Expert System.
The main tasks controlled by HIBPES are to select the super-structures of highway bridges with ranges from small to medium spans and to choose the constructing methods of the selected super-structures. Solving strategy in HIBPES Involves generating the several feasible alternatives and evaluating them, in the last the best solution in presented to users.
HIBPES was implemented in OPS5, a rule-based language at Carnegie-Mellon University. The basic data element in OPS5 is Object-Attribute-Value, it also provides the mechanism of forward chainning.
Finally to approve the capabilities of HIBPES, some applications are made to select the super-structures and constructing methods of them.
