Poly(vninyl pyridine) resin beads with varying degree of crosslinking were prepared and then quaternized by alkyl halides. The quaternization rate decreased with degree of crosslinking and the size of alkyl halide, but increased with the dielectric constant of solvent used. Particularly reaction rate decreased steeply as the quaternization proceeded. It was known that the rate constant at 20% quaternization was about a quarter of initial rate constant through proper model. Polymer-supported ammonium and phosphonium salts were prepared and their catalytic activities were investigated in three phase reaction. Catalytic activities of phosphonium salts wre greater than those of ammonium salts. There was a maximum point of catalytic activity as the concentration of phase transfer catalysts and the degree of crosslinking varied.
