A mathematical model is derived to predict the cutting force from a given feedrate in turning operation by taking the compliance of the machine tool into consideration. A conventional PI controller is applied to the model in order to regulate the cutting force only to show it's limitations. A simple adaptation PI control scheme is implemented to overcome the system instability problem in case of the conventional PI controller.
The effect of considering the machine tool compliance in modeling of cutting process is investigated in relation with the stability of the whole system. Experimental results from laboratory evaluation of the proposed controllers are presented.
