A two dimensional shape for maximum momentum transfer from a pressure is designed using a shape optimal design technique. A boundary integral equation formulation is used.
For numerical discretization, a boundary element method is employed. Since the sensitivity formulas include various derivatives along the boundary in addion to the primary solutions of BEM equations, many numerical adaptations are possible, with differing results. Four schemes have been considered and compared with numerical examples. Good accuracy is obtained depending on the schemes. But each scheme works differently with a different problem.
A simple tension plate is used to test the optimization. The minimum weight design of the momentum transfer plate is then presented and the results discussed.
