In this paper, an analytical method was studied to locate an impact point on a structure so that maximum stress caused by impact is minimized.
Since a structure vibrates freely after impact loading, the impact caused stress can be related to the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the structure. Inversely the maximum impact stress can be minimized as varying the impact point if the dynamic characteristics are known.
Also concentrated mass adding effect on the impact stress was analytically studies. The suggested method was applied on a simple beam and the calculated stress change was qualitatively compared with the experimentally obtained values.
In order to expand the suggested technique to 3-D structure, 2-D frame structure was analyzed using F.E.M. model to find out the optimal impact point.
