Teens’ smartphone adoption rate has been rapidly increasing. The adoption rate of smartphones among teens is now over 80% in most developed nations. Such high rates of smartphone adoption are related to various problems such as growing smartphone addiction rate, lowering school performance and conflicts with their parents. To this reason, parental mediation on teens’ smartphone use has received a significant attention in recent years. For parenting teens’ digital media usage, making collaborative efforts with all family members is considered to be critical in digital parenting; e.g., parents actively involve in teaching good media usage (e.g. watching TV together or playing online games together). However, unique characteristics of smartphones (i.e. personal and pervasively available) make such collaborative mediation less effective-digital medium is no longer shared (in a co-located place), as family members have their own smartphones, and content consumption tailored to each user’s preference can happen at any time and any place. In this thesis, we propose a “co-limiting” method in which parents actively participate in parental mediation by making collaborative effort on limiting smartphone use along with their children. We design and realize this idea with an initial prototype app called NUGU-Family. We perform a preliminary user study to evaluate its effectiveness with four families. Our results suggest that parents and teens feel that our co-limiting approach greatly helps them to facilitate limiting smartphone use and to provide mutual understanding on smartphone us-age. In addition, NUGU-family encourages conversations about smartphone usage/limiting among family members. NUGU-Family helps them to limit smartphone use and to motivate the users to collaboratively make efforts to promote good smartphone usage behaviors, by collaboratively limiting smartphone use. From the experimental results, we draw several key design insights on parental mediation on teens’ smartphone use.
현재 청소년 스마트폰 보급률이 80%를 넘어가면서, 청소년들의 스마트폰 집착 증세도 증가하고 있다. 따라서 청소년들의 스마트폰 과사용으로 인한 학업저하, 부모님과의 갈등 등 다양한 문제가 발생하고 있다. 따라서 청소년 스마트폰 과사용에 따른 부모 중재의 필요성에 대해서 부각되고 있다. 그러나 현재 이미 존재하는 중재 방법에는 부모님의 참여가 매우 간과 되어 있고, 자녀의 자발적 참여 기회가 없다는 점에서 많은 한계점들을 지니고 있다. 뿐만 아니라 개인적 기기 이면서 언제 어디서나 사용할 수 있다는 스마트폰의 미디어 특성상 기존의 미디어 중재 방법을 적용하는데 어려움이 있다.
미디어 학습 및 교육에 있어서 자녀와 부모의 공동 노력이 중요하다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 부모와 자녀가 함께 절제 노력을 하는 공동 절제(co-limiting) 접근방법을 제안하고 모바일 소프트웨어 누구패밀리(NUGU-Family)로 만들었다. 또한 청소년이 포함된 가족 4그룹을 통해 사용자 실험을 하였고, 그 효과성에 대해서 평가를 하였다.
정성적 스터디를 통해 참여한 부모와 자녀 모두 새로운 접근 방법에 대해 호의적인 반응을 보였다. 실험의 결과, 누구패밀리(NUGU-Family)를 통해 부모와 자녀 모두 사용에 대한 상호이해를 증진 시킬 수 있었으며, 사용 정보 공유를 통해서 스마트폰 사용에 대한 토론 및 대화가 증진됨을 확인 하였다. 누구패밀리(NUGU-Family)는 다양한 절제 보조 기능(스크린 락, 경쟁 기제)을 통해 부모와 자녀가 절제행동에 지속적인 동기를 부여하는 것을 확인하였다. 본 연구를 통해서 스마트폰 중재에 있어서 온라인 정보 공유와 공동 절제방법의 가능성에 대해서 확인 할 수 있었다.
