Low molecular weight nematic liquid crystalline prepolymers with carboxyl end groups were prepared by reacting diacetoxybiphenyl and excess of azelaic acid. Low molecular weight smectic liquid crystalline prepolymers with acetoxy end groups were prepared by reacting excess diacetoxybiphenyl and sebacic acid.
