Recently, the labor-dependence of clamping and unclamping works are intensively discussed in the viewpoint of the rationalisation reserve of the F.M.S.
In order to automate clamping and unclamping operations of every workpieces in F.M.S., an assembly system composed of modular jig-and-fixture elements, an assembly machine and some mechanical parts is developed.
Considering of position control and prices, a gantry type assembly machine is developed, for easy changing of suitable gripper to handle various jig-and-fixture elements, a gripper changer is attached to the assembly machine arm.
Jig-and-fixture element are designed to be compatible for automatic assembling with the machine.
Maximum speed, maximum pay-load and operating areas of machine are investigated and functions of the gripper changer are checked.
Through the repeated experimental operations, this system shows possibilities to be used jig-and-fixture automation in F.M.S.
There are some problems such as bolting and sticking phenomenon to be solved in the near future.
