The development of a machine translation system is one of the most difficult computational tasks. Without the resolution of syntactic and word-sense ambiguities, a machine translation system cannot produce accurate translation results.
The resolution of several ambiguities appeared in English-to-Korean machine translation has been studied using Hornby's verb patterns(HVP) and the semantic features of words.
In this thesis, a parsing mechanism using the verb patterns and a semantic analysis procedure based on a surface case frame which consists of the grammatical category of HVP, the semantic feature of words, and postposition is presented. Besides, a dependency structure which reflects the dependency relations between constituents of a sentence is proposed for word ordering.
