Solid waste management in Korea, was considered less important than water pollution control or air pollution control. In addition, the study which had been made on solid waste laid emphasis upon the techincal aspect for the collection and disposal methods. Therefore, improvement of both the approach method and management systems would be needed in order to manage municipal solid waste effectively.
This study investigated two issues and their improvement on municipal solid waste management. In the first study, several methods for municipal solid waste survey were reviewed and compared. In the second study, several alternatives of town solid waste management were evaluated in terms of unit cost, i.e. won per ton.
The following conclusions were made for this study:
1. The standard method for survey should be introduced in order to obtain the accurate data about composition and generation rate of municipal solid waste.
2. Source separation of compostable components from town solid waste was estimated as an economical alternative.
